Within this letter written to Timothy, there are six vital instructions drawn from its wisdom-filled pages. Six secrets that will help us all follow in Paul’s footsteps and finish our spiritual race.
Stay strong in the grace of Christ. 2 Timothy 2:1 (NKJV) you therefore, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus. “So how can I be strong in the grace of God?” Titus 2:11-13 NLT answers this question. To become strong in grace you must: 1. Cooperate with Him! 2. We must change. 3. We must be quick to respond.
Be strong and endure hardness like a good solider. 2 Timothy 2:3 (NKJV) – Never stop believing or doing God’s eternal word; don’t fall apart when persecution and affliction comes. James 1:4 (NKJV) But let patience have its perfect work, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking nothing. Patience is a force that does not yield to circumstances or succumb to defeat!
Don’t get entangled with the affairs of this life! 2 Timothy 2:4 (NKJV) – This third word of advice occurs when a soldier becomes preoccupied with natural activities and the responsibilities of life.
Remember, Jesus is risen! 2 Timothy 2:8 (NKJV) Jesus, won every battle! Ephesians 2:6 (NKJV) and raised us up together, and made us sit together in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, Romans 8:17 (NKJV) and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him, that we may also be glorified together.
Study, Study, Study. 2 Timothy 2:15 (NLT) Work hard so you can present yourself to God and receive his approval. Be a good worker, one who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly explains the word of truth. When Paul wrote this unto Timothy, Timothy wasn’t 20 or 30, he was in his 40’s. Paul wanted Timothy to stay on course. God’s word controls your thinking and actions as well as, keeping your faith strong and your testimony sure! Joshua 1:8 (NLT)
Avoid temptation through associations. 2 Timothy 2:22 (NKJV) Flee also youthful lusts; but pursue righteousness, faith, love, peace with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart. The second part of that verse is the key – … those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart. Their faith should encourage our faith. 1 Corinthians 15:33 (AMP) Do not be so deceived and misled! Evil companionships (communion, associations) corrupt and deprave good manners and morals and character.
